Saint James Evangelical Lutheran Church

Confirmation

St. James invites youth to participate in catechetical classes to prepare them for the Rite of Confirmation.

Children who are entering the sixth grade attend classes on Sunday mornings at 9:30 in the time between our two worship services.   These classes begin in September and conclude at the end of May each year.  The program for each student lasts three years.   Older children who desire to take part are also welcomed but will still need to complete three years of instruction.

In class we study from the basic outline of Martin Luther’s Catechism.   Instead of an emphasis on memorization, classes are designed for the students to grow in faith, gain knowledge from the scriptures and the teachings of the church, and to grant them an ability to integrate their Christian beliefs with their everyday world.

The Rite of Confirmation generally takes place on Pentecost Sunday in the Spring each year.  At that time, the congregation celebrates with the students when they affirm that they intend to continue to live within the covenantal promises made by themselves or their parents at their Baptism and pledge before God that they accept responsibility for the continuation of their Christian growth and education.
