“Then God said, let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness. So God created humankind in his image. In the image of God he created them. Male and female he created them. God blessed them.” (Genesis 1:27-28) At each point of the creation story God speaks, it is so, and God declares it good. When God creates humanity, God looks at creation and, “indeed, it was very good.” Scripture does not say that God created Christianity and declared it good. Or Islam and declared it good. Or Judaism and declared it good. Or Buddhism and declared it good. Organized religion is a human creation to help us bond on the basis of faith and better understand God. We are the ones that created categories and definitions, sometimes giving them value and sometimes using the category to dismiss another. If God created humans and declared them good. God blessed them – and blesses you – and each person you meet. So why do we create so many barriers?
